In 1869, Summit was originally established as a township from portions of New Providence Township, now known as Berkeley Heights, and Springfield Township. The township was then reincorporated as a city in 1899.

First through fifth-grade students attend Brayton, Jefferson, Lincoln- Hubbard, Franklin, or Washington schools. All sixth through eighth graders in Summit go to Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School. Lastly, Summit High School caters to ninth through twelfth graders. If you would like to attend college near home, Summit is a great place to be with Union County College, Farleigh Dickinson University, Seton Hall University, and Kean University all within a ten-mile radius.

Economy

The economy in Summit offers jobs locally but if you happen to be commuting to Manhattan for work, Summit is a great place to live because it is only a 45-minute drive away. The Summit Train Station takes riders from Summit to New York City Penn Station within 35-50 minutes. Also, the Lakeland Bus line takes Summit passengers to Port Authority in Manhattan. If you’re traveling further, Newark International Airport is only 15 short minutes away.

In their free time, Summit residents have a number of things to do right in their own town. Downtown Summit has a variety of services and restaurants to choose from. MONDO is a unique attraction in Summit, where visitors can shop, dine and embrace their creative side. It offers restaurants, retail shops, entertainment, and fitness and wellness programs. The 94-year-old brick building is dedicated to the arts of all types. Speaking of arts, Summit has its own playhouse, home to the Playhouse Association that puts on three plays a year. The playhouse association was originally created in 1918 as a World War 1 relief organization. Another historical building in Summit is the Carter house, originally built in 1741, home to The Summit Historical Society, who provide tours of the colonial-style home.
